V poklidné hanácké obci Smržice, stával kostel nejméne od roku 1309, tohoto roku je zmínena zdejší fara. Vííme jen, že byl 20 m dlouhý a 7 m široký, z kamene s klenutou lodí. Puvodne byl zasvecen sv. Michaelovi, archandelovi.

Roku 1617 je kostel zminován jako velmi zpustošený. Další zpráva o kostele ve Smržicích pochází z roku 1672 a je zvláštní zmínka, že kostel je zasvecen apoštolum sv. Petrovi a Pavlovi a má dva bocní oltáre.

Kdy a jak došlo ke zmene zasvecení není známo. Kostel byl ponicen a vykraden švédy a musel být opetovne vysvecen. Stalo se tak roku 1744.

V roce 1750 zapocala vnitrní prestavba lodi. Bohužel další válecné události kostelu opet neprály. Další zkázou pak byl nicivý požár Smržic roku 1765.

Tehdy shorela strecha a zvony byly tak poškozeny, že musely být prelity. Zniceny byly i oltáre a tak roku 1818 byl kostel oznacen farárem za zborenište. Do roku 1836 byl kolem kostela malý hrbitov.

V roce 1854 byl kostel rozebrán a posvecen nový základní kámen. Architektem nové stavby byl šternberský rodák Jan Aulegh. Stavba byla dokoncena roku 1861. V kostele jsou od roku 1859 varhany, nekolik vzácných obrazu a dnešní zvony z roku 1975.

U kostela stojí budova fary z roku 1761, která nahradila starou budovu z veprovic a dreva. Nejsterší farní matrika nese letopocet 1717. Zajímavostí Smržic je i návšteva pruského krále Bedricha II. v roce 1758, kdy zde mel hlavní stan za prusko-rakouských válek.

Then burned the roof and bells were so damaged they had to be transfused. They destroyed the altars and so in 1818 the church was designated pastor as a ruin. 1836 was a small cemetery around the church.
 
In 1854 the church was dismantled and dedicate a new headstone. The architect of the new building was šternberk's native Jan Aulegh. Construction was completed in 1861. The church organ from 1859, several rare paintings and today's bells from 1975.

At the church stands rectory building from 1761, which replaced the old building of adobe and wood. Nejsterší parish registry bears the year 1717. Interestingly Smržice a visit to the Prussian King Frederick II. in 1758, when it was the headquarters for the Prussian-Austrian war.
