Vashti is a small, rural community in Clay County, with less than a hundred people. It's pronounced "VASH-tie." Some history, slightly edited, is taken from "Vashti 1878 - 1978," compiled by the Vashti History Committee:

The United Methodist Church

On Sept 21, 1891, 1/2 acre of land (the northeast corner of Vashti intersection) was bought for $1.00 from L. A. Manning by church trustees: L. A. Manning, G. W. Terry, G. B. Wadsworth, T. W. Harber and R. G. Clark. On this land, where the blacksmith shop later stood, the meeting for organization was called. There were 68 charter members, and later reached a peak membership in 1905 with 287 members. The building erected on this land was used only a short time, until destroyed by a storm. It was rebuilt on the present site, a 6 acre plot deeded to the church by G. H. Hodges on Aug 10, 1894. This was an oblong building facing east with two front doors, the pulpit on the west wall. In 1920 the building was remodeled and has been kept as it is now.

Church service in the old days was on the second Sunday of each month. They had WSCS (the Women's Missionary Society) and Epworth League (MYF). In 1912 a parsonage was built on five acres across from the church for the family of Luther Tannery and other pastors through the years until the mid 1950's.
