 Fontaine construite en 1560 par le tailleur de pierre-sculpteur d'Ammerschwihr Wolf Schrapp. Fortement endommagée au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et par les outrages du temps, la statue et la colonne ont été remplacées en mars 1977 par une copie du sculpteur colmarien Frédéric Schické. L'original, endommagé, en grès jaune est abrité à l'Hôtel de ville.
Au milieu d'un bassin hexagonal, s'élève une colonne bombée, richement ornée de quatre personnages féminins portant des couronnes ou des cornes d'abondance. De la gueule de deux têtes de lion se déverse l'eau par des longs tuyaux. Au-dessus se dresse le fût d'une colonne cannelée portant à sa base quatre têtes juvéniles sortant d'une draperie. La colonne porte au-dessus d'un chapiteau corinthien la statue proprement dite de l'homme sauvage, tenant dans une main un écu aux armes de la ville et de l'autre un cep de vigne. Cette figure mythique puise ses sources conjointement dans le folklore paysan, la naissance de la nation allemande et ta découverte du Nouveau Monde.

 Fountain built in 1560 by the stone-sculptor of Ammerschwihr Wolf Schrapp. Heavily damaged during the Second World War and by the outrages of time, the statue and the column were replaced in March 1977 by a copy of the Colmarian sculptor Frédéric Schické. In the middle of a hexagonal basin stands a domed column, ornamented with four female figures bearing crowns or horns of abundance. From the mouth of two lion-heads the water pours through long pipes. Above is the shaft of a fluted column carrying at its base four juvenile heads emerging from a drapery. The column carries over a Corinthian capital the statue proper of the savage man, holding in one hand a shield to the arms of the city and on the other a vine stock.
