The waymark coordinates are for a point 3.8 miles east on park Road 12 from the junction with the Main Park Road (US385/Old TX 227) at Panther Junction Visitor Center, the same road the WPA writers traveled when they explored the eastern part of the Big Bend.
The gorgeous, jagged mountains of the Sierra del Carmen Mountains in Mexico are made of layers of limestone of different colors, so they are very visually striking.
"[page 625] At 66 m. is a junction with a graded road (alternating stretches of dirt or gravel roadbed).
Left on this road the mountain masses pile ever higher. The Carmen Mountains of Mexico are visible (L), at 3.8 m. From near Boquillas, on the Rio Grande, this mighty range sweeps away to the southeast for approximately 40 miles at heights ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 feet. The coloring changes with the atmosphere, but is usually a deep, velvet red, which, as the sunlight fades, becomes a peculiar purplish maroon. Artists regard the Carmens as possessing the most beautiful color combinations of the Big Bend. This range was named for Nuestra Senora del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen)."
