The arms of the Egerton family are depicted on the hanging pub sign and on a freestanding Pillory sign situated away from the pub on the A43 entrance to the car park.
The name “Egerton” was taken from a famous family who once resided in the village, they were the owners of the manors of Newbold and Astbury. The pub dates back to the early 1700s.

The village of Astbury lies just South of Congleton, on the eastern edge of the Cheshire Plain. The most dominating feature of this small village is St Marys Church. It stands proud overlooking the Egerton Arms and the village cottages and houses.

The Ergerton Arms is family run and the building dates from 1560 and was originally a farm serving the monastery next to St Mary's Church. It began brewing on site and had one of the first licences in the area. The restaurant is the former barn.

Freshly prepared meals are served everyday. They offer everything from a light snack, a vegetarian meal, a salad or a homemade sandwich. Lunch and Dinner is also served daily in the Restuarant Area. (visit link)

The Egerton Arms is one of the few pubs in the area that is reputed to have it’s own resident ghost. In 1922 Edward Spendlow, who lived in the house next door to the pub attacked his sister in-law Margaret Slater. She later died as a result and Spendlow was hanged for his crime in 1929 at Chester.
