Hercules is a large lunar crater named after the mythological hero Hercules, the son of Jupiter, who is the Roman counterpart of the Greek god Zeus. A bronze sculpture of Hercules , is located in the Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona.

The prominent lunar crater Hercules is located in the northeast part of the Moon. The crater is 69 km in diameter and 3.2 km in depth. A satellite crater, Hercules G, is located south of the center of the crater.


A 2.65 m by 1.31 m by 0.50 m bronzes sculpture of the Hercules by Antoni Parera is is located on the pillar at the eastern entrance to the Plaça de Catalunya. The mythological hero is depicted semi-naked with a blanket on his back which wraps around to cover the genitals. The bearded figure is holding a large rock over his right shoulder with both hands.

Hercules (known in Greek as Heracles) is one of the best known heroes in Greek and Roman mythology. During his life he endured many trials and completed many difficult tasks with the hope of being rewarded with eternal life among the gods at Mount Olympus.

These tasks became known as the as the Twelve Labors of Hercules. They include:

Slay the Nemean Lion.
Slay the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra.
Capture the Golden Hind of Artemis.
Capture the Erymanthian Boar.
Clean the Augean stables in a single day.
Slay the Stymphalian Birds.
Capture the Cretan Bull.
Steal the Mares of Diomedes.
Obtain the girdle of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.
Obtain the cattle of the monster Geryon.
Steal the apples of the Hesperides.
Capture and bring back Cerberus.
