This stone carving of a World War I soldier in battledress forms part of the town's war memorial.

The memorial is sculpted from granite in the following style.
Figure of rifleman surmounts square-set stone plinth. Plinth bears names and inscription in incised black lettering. There is a stepped stone base.

The soldier in battledress is facing to the side with his rifle in both hands, slightly raised and with a bayonet attached to the rifle.

It stands at the side of the hill between Rochdale Road and Oldham Road in a small memorial garden. The entrance to the garden is from Rochdale Road,the higher of the two roads.
