This hike meanders up the lower slopes of Mt Ruapehu via the Ridge Track and provides views across the top of The Chateau and over Bruce Road, northwards to the volcanic cone of Mt Ngauruhoe and to Mt Tongariro, with the peaks of Mt Ruapehu showing over the ridge behind you. This is a steepish uphill walk but can be done in all seasons, and may be under snow in winter. Wear suitable hiking shoes and warm clothes. The track is graded well to start with under the tree cover, but erosion has made it rough out on the tussock slope. It is a reasonably short walk but the ridgeline is exposed to the cold winds and weather, and can be extremely cold in winter. At the lookout there is a wooden seating/standing platform so it is a nice spot to rest, have lunch and enjoy the views.
