The tomb of Cosimo di Giovanni de' Medici is located in a crypt below the altar of the church he founded, the Basilica of St. Lorenzo. The tomb is located in a room which can be view through an iron gate. A sign on the gate reads:

FUNERARY MONUMENT TO COSIMO
Head of the Medici family Cosimo the Elder was buried
by order of his son Piero insice the quadrangular pilaster
supporting the presbyter of the Basilica of San Lorenzo
and, symbolically, determining the family's fate as well.
The tombstone of precious polychrome marbles is
located at the foot of the chancel. The funary monument
was executed in 1464 by Andrea del Verrocchia. In
March 1465, the Signoria of Florence affixed the
inscription PATER PATRIAE on the tomb stone.
Description: Cosimo de' Medici was an extremely wealthy Italian was an Italian banker and politician. He founded the Medici political dynasty, who for generations were the rulers of Florence during much of the Renaissance Era. After his death he was given the title Pater Patriae, Father of the Country.
Cosimo, as a patron of the arts, commissioned and financed great works of learning, the arts and architecture. He funded the first public library of Florence at at San Marco, was the patron of the sculptor Donatello, and the architect Filippo Brunelleschi who then constructed the fabulous dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
