Construction on the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore was started in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio. It was completed in 1436 with the fabulous, ground breaking, dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. When it was designed, it was the largest dome in the world. It measures nearly 150 feet in diameter and is situated 180 feet above the ground, atop the existing walls of the Basilica. Brunelleschi's ingenious solution to build a dome at this grand scale was to construct a smaller, unseen, dome inside the larger dome to support the weight of the dome.
The painting of the inside began in 1572 when the Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari and Vincenzo Borghini to paint frescoes on the dome. After the death of Giorgio Vasari in 1574, Federico Zuccaro, an artist from Urbino, completed the frescoes around 1575-79. The frescoes depict the Last Judgement.
