This flora and fauna information sign along the Chisos Mountain Lodge Road discusses the tree zone so apparent between the Chisos Mountains area of Big Bend and the desert below.

The sign reads as follows:

"TREE ZONE

The world of trees begins at this elevation. As you ascend the lower mountain slopes, you will enter a woodland of junipers, oaks, and Mexican pinons. If you hike to higher elevations, along the Colima or Pinnacle Trails, you can enter a forest of tall Arizona Pines and Douglas Fir.

Trees thrive in the increased rainfall and cooler daytime temperatures of these peaks, but the growth pattern is not simply a function of altitude. Look for denser thickets along north facing slopes and in shaded drainages. On Sunday, south facing terrain, grasses dominate and thorny fingers of desert - ocotillo and lechugilla -sometimes invade."
