The tomb of the lionesses is a tomb located in the necropolis Etruscan of Tarquinia ; It dates back to 520 BC and was discovered in 1874. It consists of a single room with a pitched ceiling. It is accessed through a dromos with steps.


The Tomb of the Lionesses is one of best preserved Etruscan tombs located in the Monterozzi Necropolis. It was discovered in 1874 and is dated to about 520 BCE. It gets its name from a pair of lionesses painted in red depicted facing each other on gable of the back wall.

The tomb has a brightly painted chamber and an unadorned inner niche which held the body of the deceased. Above the niche two musicians, on either side of a large vessel, are playing a lyre and a double flute. On the left a a woman is dancing and on the right a man and a woman are dancing. Along both side walls, which are decorated with red columns, people at a banquet are depicted in a reclining position.
