At the end of Colvin Street, Sancrox is the playing fields and reserve with a covered picnic area. Just in, on the right-hand side, amongst flourishing Lomandra plants is white marble obelisk, standing about 2 metres tall. This is within a low wrought iron filigreed rail.
Below the marble 'floral wreath' on the obelisk there is a VERY hard to read 'inscription'; but it is possible to make out that it is for Allen Johnson - 1901.
What is easier to read, is the bronze plaque set into the concrete base, in front of the obelisk. It reads:
"George Allen Johnson
1845 - 1901
This memorial is dedicated to Allen Johnson
for his contribution to the development
of the timber industry in the Hastings District.
Born in Tasmania, he migrated to N.S.W
from New Zealand with his wife
Harriet and family in 1882. He finally
settled in this district
establishing the first sawmill
in Wauchope in 1890
and twin mill at Sancrox in 1898/9
He died in 1901, Aged 55 years"
Personally I had three uncles who grew up in the Wauchope area in the 1920s and 30s who took on timber getting for a while before taking their families elsewhere.
