Bradford has always been associated with the woollen trade and before the industrial revolution relied upon easily available water.
Traditionally a well at this site was always known as Jacob's Well.
Although no trace of the well remains, this sculpture seems to serve as a link to the site's past, although whether a mermaid was ever seen there is doubtful.
There is also a small frog at the base of the statue.
