Thomas Chippendale was born in 1718 in Otley, the only son of John Chippendale, joiner. He was educated at Prince Henry’s Grammar School and was trained in woodworking by his father, and later by Richard Wood of York. Chippendale moved to London and founded a business there in partnership with James Rannie, a Scots merchant. After the death of Rannie Chippendale went into partnership with Thomas Haig and Henry Ferguson to form Chippendale Haig and Co.

Between 1754 and 1762 Chippendale produced his master work, The Gentleman and Cabinet Makers Director, featuring furniture designs in the English Rococo and Neoclassical styles. Chippendale was more than just a supplier of furniture, he was also an interior designer undertaken the complete design of rooms and houses. He undertook major commissions from major aristocratic clients.

Thomas Chippendale junior took over the business in 1776, at which point Chippendale senior retired. The business went into bankruptcy in 1804. Thomas Chippendale senior died of TB in 1779 and was buried at St Martins in the Fields.
The plaque reads

“This plaque commemorates Thomas Chippendale the famous cabinet maker baptised at Otley Church 5 June 1718. The son of an Otley carpenter, who was born in a cottage which formerly stood here.”
