This granite obelisk was originally dedicated to the memory of William Peter Kenneth Milligan. Milligan was killed in battle at Reinhardt's River during the South African War (Boer War). Before joining the Canadian Yeomanry to serve in South Africa, Milligan had been a captain in the local militia in Durham county, 46th Durham Regiment.

Eventually, the memorial would serve to honour the sacrifice of four participants in the Great War and a pilot officer who died during the Second World War: James W Brown, Reginald Barton, Shoeing Smith George Henry Noden, Oscar George Sowden, and Milton Robert Morton.
