Located within Civic Center Plaza and next to a kinetic sculpture and water fountain is an abstract sculpture by artist Melvin Schuler. This particular sculpture has a very similar style to world-renowned artist Henry Moore in which this art form takes on a heavy, organic look and feel. This sculpture almost looks like a cross between a woman's shoe and an anchor.

After trying to do some research on the artist I discovered that he passed away in 2012. I was able to locate an online obituary about his life and it reads:

Melvin A. Schuler Sculptor 1924-2012 The family and friends of Melvin Schuler want you to know that he died peacefully on Sunday May 20th at his home in Arcata Ca. and in the company of his beloved, long time partner, Ed Oliver. A native Californian, Schuler graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts and began his esteemed teaching career in 1947 at Humboldt State University. He was Professor Emeritus when he died. Schuler will be best remembered for his large abstract sculptures using old growth redwood carved into abstract forms clad in copper and fastened with bronze nails. As in life, his art was blended with the work of his partner, Ed Oliver. His work was sought by collectors and often commissioned for public installations. Museums acquiring his work include the Smithsonian, Hirshhorn, Palm Springs, Phoenix, Oakland, La Jolla, Portland, Crocker and Storm King. Melvin's legacy as a teacher, friend and artist inspire his survivors to ask that you remember him by taking a walk in nature or pausing to admire a work of art. There will be no service or memorial.
