The real-size replica of Sputnik-1, the first ever artificial Earth satellite, installed in front of the Russian Embassy in Madrid was unveiled on June 12, 2008, by Madrid's City Council, INTA, INSA company, the Mayor of Moscow (Yuri Luzhkov) and Russian ambassador in Madrid (Alexander Kuznetsov). Sputnik 1 (Satellite 1" in russian) was the first Earth-orbiting artificial satellite and the first man made object to be put into Earth's orbit. It was launched by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. Before its fall on January 3rd, 1958 it orbited the Earth 1400 times at a speed of about 29000 km/h. The replica was at first installed in front of Madrid's Planetarium on the occasion of 50th Anniversary of the Sputnik 1 launch and one year later it was moved in front of the Russian Embassy.
