"The Ruth Bell Lane Memorial Gardens at the Williams House are being restored through the generous support of Bill and Mel Lane and their families as a tribute to their mother. Ruth Bell Lane worked alongside her husband, Laurence Lane, to establish Sunset publications as the definitive guides to western living. She played a vital role in ensuring that both aesthetic and culinary gardening were cornerstones of Sunset's books and magazines. Thanks to her vision, the Sunset Western Garden Book remains the prime source for western gardening, with over 6 million copies sold since it was first published in 1932. Sunset encouraged readers to take full advantage of their region's unique climate. As early as the 1930s Sunset promoted water-wise Mediterranean gardens, experimentation with exotic fruits and vegetables, and garden designs to encourage outdoor living. The restoration of the MOAH gardens was undertaken using early Sunset publications as our principle guide. As much as possible, we have tried to select plants that would have been available in our area prior to the 1940s. We are sincerely grateful to the Lane family for their enthusiasm and generosity in the restoration and ongoing maintenance of our gardens."
