The plaque reads
“On this site once stood the second Devonshire Arms. The present building was the Conservative Club completed in time for Sir Robert Gunter MP of nearby Grange Park, to celebrate his victory in the 1892 election. He addressed the crowd from the balcony.”
Sir Robert Gunter was a Conservative MP from 1885 to 1905. He resided at Wetherby Grange and was JP for the West Riding of Yorkshire and Lieutenant Colonel commanding of the 3rd Batallion Princess of Wales Own Regiment.
He was first elected MP for Knaresborough at a by election in 1884 following the death of the incumbent MP, Thomas Collins. In 1885, after the abolition of the constituency, he was elected MP for Barkston Ash. He was MP for Barkston Ash until his death in 1905.
