the town of Shipley is in the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Bradford. In 2002 Bradford made a bid to become a European City of Culture and this mural was painted on the gable end of a house to help with the bid.

At first sight the mural does seem to show scenes from around the town. Moorland hills above the town, the Leeds Liverpool Canal that passes through the town and a famous woollen mill and bales of wool. However look a bit closer and you start to see things that don't look so local including coal miners, and unusual towers on the hills.

It turns out that the mural was painted by Amerjeat Kaur and Shaun Fagan of Metro Arts (a council-run arts project), but also a German artist Osman Bol.

The fact that a German artist worked on the mural gives a clue to the unusual objects. Bradford is twinned with the German city of Hamm and the unexpected objects depict scenes from around Hamm.

The mural is therefore an artistic rather than a literal view. There are two children at the top of the mural and apparently they lived in the house where the mural is located. link If you wish to visit the mural it is handily located at the end of a car park.
