The sculpture was erected in 2008 as part of a regeneration scheme for the town centre.

"The name 'Shipley' derives from the Old English scip ('sheep', a Northumbrian dialect form, contrasting with the Anglian dialect form scep which underlies modern English sheep) and leah ('open ground, such as meadow, pasture, or arable land'). Thus it means 'sheep-clearing' or 'sheep-pasture'." link It is therefore appropriate to have a sheep sculpture in the town centre.

This particular sculpture is a little quirky and shows a sheep sitting on a bench with a shopping bag and cast iron umbrella.

Unfortunately since it was installed, plants around the sculpture have grown and now partly obscure it.
