Dans l'ancien temps, les seigneurs qui venaient sur leurs terres à la campagne devaient trouver de la nourriture en abondance.
Le pigeonnier constituait un excellent garde-manger.

Autrefois, une corniche nettement en saillie empêchait rats et belettes de grimper le long des murs pour pénétrer dans l'édifice par une des lucarnes.
Une échelle verticale, suspendue à des potences fixées sur un mat central pivotant sur sa base, permettait l'accès aux nids.

Aujourd'hui, un chêne centenaire pousse au centre du pigeonnier, un arbre classé parmi les 210 arbres remarquables de France.
Sur la commune de Béceleuf il reste 4 pigeonniers (Sur 5) dont celui de Pouzay qui est le seul accessible.
