This fascinating homemade tombstone for J. D. Carta at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ozona Texas is ONE of the most unique we have ever seen. Tiny Gryphaea (Devil's Toenail or Elf Shoe) oyster fossils, carefully selected to be the same size, are arranged carefully to form the name and vital dates for J.D. Carta. The rest of this gorgeous handmade tombstone features local colorful stones pressed into a concrete form and a window at the top.

This tombstone was so arresting it literally stopped us in our tracks on our way out of the cemetery.

This is the tombstone of the child: perhaps it was made with stones and fossils that he himself had picked up, in which case this would be an especially personal and loving tribute by what must've been a heartbroken family.
