Located in Alba Park, Medford's oldest city park, is a gazebo made of wood and painted white. Under the eave of the gazebo is a very small bronze plaque that reads:
This Gazebo Built By Community Donations & Constructed By HERB GIFFORD In Honor Of Medford's Centennial February 24, 1985 |
Atop the gazebo is a unique weathervane comprised of a gold pan, shovel and pickaxe, which represent the gold mining that came to the Rogue Valley in the mid-1800s.
From Wikipedia on the history of Medford:
The establishment of the post office led to the incorporation of Medford as a town by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on February 24, 1885, and again as a city in 1905.
The city was named in 1883 by David Loring, civil engineer and right-of-way agent for the Oregon and California Railroad, suggested by Medford, Massachusetts, near his home town of Concord, Massachusetts, and in recognition of its supposed position near the middle ford of Bear Creek.
