In Boston, within the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, is an exhibit about the space program under the Kennedy administration, and features a Mercury space capsule ridden by Alan Shepard.

The JFK Library and Museum, sits on the edge of Boston Harbor. To get there, from I-93, take the exit for the University of Massachusetts at Boston (Exit 14 or 15) and follow the signs on Morrisey Blvd to the entrance. Follow the road and signs to the museum.

The exhibit, titled, "The Space Race," is one of several within the museum. As there is really only one path through the museum, it is hard to miss. The exhibit is in its own room. On either side are signs, pictures, videos and other artifacts. In front of you is a full Mercury capsule with a glass wall in front. Text on the glass declares that this capsule was part of the Freedom 7 mission and occupied by Alan Shepard.

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.” - President John F. Kennedy, May 25, 1961"

These words set the focus on the U.S. Space Program. In 1969, the goal was realized when a module landed on the moon, and astronauts walked on the surface. Kennedy would not live to see this happen, however. During his time, the Freedom 7 mission occurred in 1961. After the successful completion, Kennedy spoke those words.

The capsule is on loan from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
