The mountain of Schiehallion, (The Fairy Hill of the Caledonians), is a prominent landmark situated near the geographical centre of Scotland. It is 1083 metres, 3553 feet high and is actually a four mile ridge running east to west, although from both these directions the mountain appears as a symmetrical peak especially from the west near Loch Rannoch.

The mountain was used in 1774 by the Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne, to measure the mass of the Earth.

The John Muir Trust own the eastern side and a path heads up the less steep eastern ridge from the Braes of Foss, taking two and a half miles to reach the summit. It is possible to climb up the west ridge but this is much steeper. Both the north and south sides are extremely steep and are seldom climbed.
