EN: The house auf Burg stands at the north corner of the Münsterplatz. The name refers to a Roman fortress, which had stood on the cathedral hill in the Late Antiquity. The Neo-Classical town house has three differently structured floors and extends on the east side beyond the neighboring corner house. It is therefore about twice as large as visible from the square.
The house was built in the 1840s as a dwelling-house for a wealthy citizen. Previously, there was a house of the Episcopal cathedral chapter, which had only been maintained poorly since the Reformation in 1529 and was sold by the state to the private in the early 19th century.
The house auf Burg today is the seat of the Paul Sacher Foundation with a world-renowned archive for contemporary music.
DE: Das Haus auf Burg steht an der nördlichen Ecke des Münsterplatzes. Der Name bezieht sich auf ein römisches Kastell, das in der Spätantike auf dem Münsterhügel gestanden hatte. Das klassizistische Wohnhaus hat drei unterschiedlich strukturierte Stockwerke und reicht an der Ostseite noch über das benachbarte Eckhaus hinaus. Es ist also etwa doppelt so gross, wie vom Platz aus sichtbar.
Das Haus wurde in den 1840er Jahren als Wohnhaus eines reichen Bürgers gebaut. Zuvor stand an dieser Stelle ein Haus des bischöflichen Domkapitels, das seit der Reformation 1529 nur notdürftig unterhalten worden war und im frühen 19. Jahrhundert vom Staat an Private verkauft wurde.
Das Haus auf Burg ist heute der Sitz der Paul-Sacher-Stiftung mit einem weltbekannten Archiv für zeitgenössische Musik.
