In Marshfield, within the Winslow Cemetery, is the tomb of Sen. Daniel Webster.

The cemetery is located along Winslow Cemetery Road, which is off Webster Street. The tomb is off an access road that is on the left just before reaching the roads into the cemetery. The tomb is visible at the circle.

The marker is the highest one set among a series of markers within a rectangular area lined by an iron fence. The marker for Daniel Webster is a simple marble table on another stone on top of a rise. On one side "Daniel Webster" is engraved.

Daniel Webster was a well known politician and diplomat. He was born in Salisbury, New Hampshire on January 18, 1782. He became a well known courtroom lawyer, and, on several occasions, helped shape U.S. Supreme Court cases that bolstered the authority of the federal government. He represented New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1813 to 1817, then Massachusetts from 1823 to 1827. He was Senator representing Massachusetts 1827 - 1841 and 1845 - 1850. While a Senator, he was part of the 'Great Triumvirate' between Webster, Sen. Henry Clay and Sen. John Calhoun. These three often negotiated and came up with compromises that kept the Union together. In particular, the Compromise of 1850 was crafted with Calhoun and Stephen Douglas of Illinois that pulled together several issues concerning slavery in the territories and the highly controversial Slave Fugitive Law, which the abolitionists were very critical of and which caused him to resign in 1850. He was also Secretary of State under three U.S. Presidents: Harrison, Tyler, and Filmore. He died in 1852 at his home. He was buried here.

There is a marker with a plaque at one corner that has the following:

"Daniel Webster
Born January 18, 1782
Died, October 24, 1852

'Lord, I believe, help thou
mine disbelief.'

Philosophical
argument, especially
that drawn from the vastness of
the Universe, in comparison with the
apparent insignificance of this globe has some-
times shaken my reason for the faith that is in me;
but my heart has always assured and reassures me that the
Gospel of Jesus Christ must be a Divine Reality. The
Sermon on the Mount cannot be a mere human
production. This belief enters into the
very depth of my conscience.
The whole history of man
proves it."
