Das Schloss wurde im Jahr 1587 durch Graf Simon VI. zu einem Renaissanceschloss ausgebaut. In dieser Zeit entstanden der Nordflügel mit Festsaal sowie der Turm mit fürstlichen Gemächern.
Der Bauherr Graf Simon VI. zur Lippe (1554-1613) vertrat den Typus eines gebildeten Renaissancefürsten, der sich sehr für Kunst und Wissenschaft interessierte. Er besaß eine Gemäldesammlung sowie eine umfangreiche Bibliothek. Es wird berichtet, dass er von seinem Turm aus astronomische Studien betrieben hat.
Heute befindet sich im Schloss unter anderem das Weserrenaissance-Museum (mehr Informationen: (
visit link) Die Weserrenaissance ist ein Baustil welcher sich an der nordischen Renaissance orientierte. Einige bekannte Gebäude der Weserrenaissance sind neben dem Schloss Brake das Bremer Rathaus, das Rattenfängerhaus in Hameln, Schloss Neuhaus in Paderborn und die Wewelsburg bei Paderborn.

The castle was built in 1587 by Graf Simon VI. into a renaissance castle. During this time, the north wing with the ballroom and the tower with baronial rooms were built.
The building owner, Graf Simon VI. Of the Lippe (1554-1613) represented the type of an educated Renaissance prince who was very interested in art and science. He owned a collection of paintings as well as an extensive library. It is reported that he has done astronomical studies from his tower.
Today, inside the castle is the Weserrenaissance-museum (more information: (
visit link) The Weserrenaissance is a building-style which was oriented to the Nordic Renaissance. Some well-known buildings of the Weserrenaissance are next to the Schloss Brake the Bremen town hall, the Rattenfängerhaus in Hameln, Schloss Neuhaus in Paderborn and the Wewelsburg near Paderborn.
