There is distinct instructions as to what to do to get the most reading from the sundial. Including:
"To Obtain Standard Time
Find against the Date the number of
Minutes which are to be Added to or
Subtracted from the time indicated by the
~~Shadow~~"
It looks like it could be placed on the fluke of an anchor.
