The sign of history is located outside of the old Fort Cemetery in Fort Stockton.
The Fort Stockton Cemetery is stop number 17 on the Fort Stockton historic driving tour.
The sign reads as follows:
"17
HISTORIC FORT STOCKTON CEMETERY
The Army returned in 1867 after the Civil War and rebuilt the fort. Cemetery was established in 1875. Remains of soldiers buried here were removed Fort Sam Houston national Cemetery in San Antonio in 1888 following the closure of Fort Stockton in 1886. Local residents continue to use the cemetery until 1912. Very few markers record anyone over the age of 40, signifying the harshness of frontier life.
