This interpretive sign stands in front of the ruins of the Quarter master's area at the Fort Lancaster state historic site outside of Sheffield, Texas.
The sign reads as follows:
"‘QUARTER-MASTER’
The quartermaster provided general supplies and rations for soldiers. He also oversaw the bakery, blacksmith shop, and carpenter shop. He also supervised the corral, granary, and hay yard for the forts horses and mules.
Where to feed an army
The fort reached its maximum complement of 152 men in February 1858. Keeping these men properly fed and equipped was no small task."
