This interpretive sign stands in front of the ruins of the Bakery at the Fort Lancaster state historic site outside of Sheffield, Texas.
The sign reads as follows:
"BAKERY
The bakery was a stone and adobe building a large oven that measured approximately 12 feet wide and 11 feet deep. The forts baker, also a soldier, was responsible for providing the daily ration of bread for an average of 130 men. In 1860, Inspector General Joseph Mansfield reported that the baker was excellent and his bread was of the highest quality.
