This interpretive sign stands in front of the ruins of the Commissary at the Fort Lancaster state historic site outside of Sheffield, Texas.
The sign reads as follows:
"COMMISSARY
Everything to outfit a soldier
The commissary, along with quartermaster storehouse, was 1 of the first stone buildings constructed at Fort Lancaster. It supplied soldiers with government issued provisions, uniforms, and bedding. Provisions were bought from private contractors and shipped along the Lower [El Paso-San Antonio] Road from San Antonio to the Fort."
