This interpretive sign stands in front of the ruins of the Sutler's Store at the Fort Lancaster state historic site outside of Sheffield, Texas.
The sign reads as follows:
"SUTLER’S STORE
All things fun and diverting to a soldier
Owned and operated by civilian merchant, the sutler store was the only two-story building at Fort Lancaster. The settlers sold liquor, tobacco, and supplies to travelers as well as soldiers. This building also served as a stage relay station for the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Company.
19th Century amusements
Tobacco, music, cards and for some little drink were the ways a soldier past his off-duty time when posted to this remote location."
