This interpretive sign stands in front of the ruins of the commanding officers quarters at the Fort Lancaster state historic site outside of Sheffield, Texas.
The sign reads as follows:
"COMMANDING OFFICER’S QUARTERS
The largest residents at the Fort house the commanding officer and his family. They provided hospitality for important travelers to the Fort.
“Captain Carpenter invited us to take a bite with him. We availed ourselves of the invitation with alacrity that was very amusing even to ourselves . . . To us who have been living on salt junk and hard biscuit it was a treat that we will always remember lively feelings of pleasure.”
