The first stone bridge at this site was built in 1517 with three arches. It was widened in 1632 and again in 1875.

At the time the bridge was built there was a small village called Soweby on a nearby hillside. When the bridge started to attract a new community it became known as Sowerby Bridge.

When the bridge was widened in 1875 an iron super-structure was added, supported by the cutwaters on the southern side and by 2 round piers on northern side. It has latticed base and balustrade with round-ended panels and panelled standards with pyramidal finials.
