"OLIVER PRINCE SMITH
1893-1977
Born in Menard, Texas
Was a General in the United States Marine Corps at a highly decorated combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He is most noted for commanding the 1st Marine Division in Korea during the Inchon invasion and the battle of the Chosin Reservoir, where his division was completely surrounded by 8 to 10 Chinese divisions, who outnumbered the Marines 10 to 1. He led the "Breakout" which save the division, an epic battle famous in Marine Corps history. He retired at the rank of four-star General, and advanced in rank for having been specially commended for heroism in combat."
