A catapult is a ballistic device used to launch a projectile a great distance without the aid of explosive devices — particularly various types of ancient and medieval siege engines. Weighing over four tons, it was transported to the battleground in pieces. A siege engine like this one was used at Les Baux during the siege against Robert de Duras in 1355.
The Château des Baux-de-Provence is the only site in the South of France with working siege engines. These faithful re-enactments of real-size machines draw real projectiles and allow us to relive the atmosphere of a siege in the Middle Ages.
