"Die St.-Kassians-Kirche zählt neben der Alten Kapelle und St. Emmeram zu den ältesten Kirchen der Stadt Regensburg. Die Legende berichtet, dass sie auf dem Areal eines ehemaligen heidnischen Tempels errichtet wurde, wie es in einer Inschrift über dem Hochaltar heißt: „Templum S. Cassiani olim Idolorum“, was so viel heißt wie Tempel des heiligen Kassian – einst Götzentempel. Erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wird die Kirche im Jahre 885. St. Kassian ist die älteste Pfarrkirche der Bürger, während die Alte Kapelle, von der die Pfarrei schon damals betreut wurde, als Hofkirche der Agilolfinger und Karolinger diente. Schon seit dem Mittelalter versah immer ein Angehöriger des Stiftskapitels zur Alten Kapelle das Amt des Pfarrers von St. Kassian. Die Liste der Pfarrvikare lässt sich bis ins Jahr 1232 zurückverfolgen. Bei dem großen Stadtbrand von Regensburg im Jahre 891 blieb als einziges Gebäude der Stadt die St.-Kassian-Kirche von den Flammen verschont.
Im Kern ist das Gotteshaus eine romanische Basilika, doch wurde die Kirche im Laufe der Zeit immer wieder verändert, so dass dieser romanische Kern auf den ersten Blick nicht leicht zu erkennen ist. 1477 wurde die Kirche erweitert und 1626 der baufällig gewordene Glockenturm abgetragen und durch den noch heute bestehenden Dachreiter (mit 2 Glocken) ersetzt. In den Jahren 1749 bis 1760 erfolgte unter dem Stuckateur Anton Landes und dem Freskanten Gottfried Bernhard Göz die Umgestaltung der Kirche im Stile des Rokoko. Ein Teil dieser Rokoko-Einrichtung wurde bei einer Renovierung im 19. Jahrhundert entfernt, darunter auch der bedeutende Hochaltar. Dieser jedoch konnte 1908/09 nach einem alten Plan wieder nachgebaut werden. Die Kassianspfarrei ist heute mit rund 65 Pfarrkindern die kleinste Pfarrei der Diözese Regensburg."
