Established in 1858, the NY state Inebriate Asylum was established to treat those with the disease of alcoholism. The nearby bell tower was used as the timing mechanism for the patients.
It was believed that regimentation therapy would break the cycle of alcohol dependency.
The main building was closed in 1993 due to safety concerns.
The building is a registered National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The marker denoting the FIRST was placed by the New York Chapter of the National Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor in 1997.
