The First United Methodist Church of Hamilton has been serving the faithful in this community since the 1850s. A gray granite memorial sign faces Main Street at the First United Methodist Church parking lot. That sign reads as follows:
"First United Methodist Church of Hamilton
This Methodist congregation is the oldest organized unit in Hamilton County, serving the people for 150 years. In 1854, the Texas conference, Austin district appointed Reverend John W Cope as minister to the Methodist Mission at Hamilton. This was 4 years before the county was organized. Hamilton County was organized in 1858 from parts of Comanche, Lampasas and Bosque counties. 2004
