[EN] It gives access to the restaurant "Le Tripot", as at the time it gave access ... to the gambling den! What is a gambling den? What happened here before the restaurant was installed? Here's what to feed your curiosity.
In the middle of the sixteenth century, a gambling den is a place designed to play with the short palm. In the present Collin street of Harleville, the gambling hall of Jerusalem is attested in 1553.
There remains only that door, restored since then and which was probably the very entrance to the game of palm. Flanked by two pillars adorned with lozenges and carved capitals, it is surmounted by a shell and the Latin inscription: "Valeant qui dissidium volunt", "Out of the quarrels! ". The gambling hall of Jerusalem closed in 1718.
A century and a half later, the building hosts a school with boarding school for girls of good family. The institution Guéry was originally a day school established in 1861 in the neighborhood of the mound Saint-Aignan by Melle Guéry. Faced with its success, it must quickly find greater. In 1863, the institution moved to the old gambling den. The boarding school is set up from time to time.
Among the events that marked the Guéry institution, there is the night of the 15th to the 16th June 1940: While the city has been bombed since the beginning of the month and many refugees cross it, a violent storm breaks out. The chapel of Sainte-Foy, place of reception of the refugees, is inundated. Jean Moulin, who signed his first act of resistance the next day, went to the spot on the morning of the 16th, and in the face of the disaster demanded the opening of the Guéry institution, as he reported in Premier Combat.
The institution moved again in the 1950s to join the impasse du Cheval Blanc.
