The timber cross marks the highest point on the Great Alpine Road, once the management boundary between the Bright and Omeo Shires. It is the highest section of year round accessible sealed road in Australia.
During the early 1920s the Alpine Road was upgraded with rise in motor car usage. The Cross became popular with motorists during the 1920s and 30s with proud drivers stopping to take photographs with their vehicles.

Snoew chains are required during the snow season
