From the Chamber of Commerce website:

In its prime, the Franco American Hotel was known as one of the largest and finest inns in Northern California. Started by the Frenchman Leon Marniesse in 1855, the hotel housed a restaurant, Wells Fargo & Company Express Office, saloon, barbershop and other businesses, and was a well-known stage stop in Yreka. Prominent hotel guests were Vice President Colfax, General & Mrs. Philip Sheridan and President Hayes. Today historic and gold rush enthusiasts can tour this grand hotel and experience the gold rush first hand at the relic mining camp and gold panning exhibit at Franco American Hotel.

I've visited many historic towns along the West Coast and any historical place that once catered to a U.S. President gets special attention. This place is one of them. Many presidents back in the day didn't travel throughout the West Coast that often, so West Coast towns are quick to promote their establishments which had connections to our past presidents.
