This part of town has undergone major changes and demolition in the early 19th century. Linhartská Square no longer exists, just Linharstká Street.

While the left side of the street is still extant, the buildings on the right were all demolished in 1908. In the background you can see the Astronomical Tower of Klementinum.

The space arose here in the Middle Ages through the parcelling out of the Romanesque Jaroš Courtyard. It was on this site that, from the end of the 13th century, stood the Church of St Linhart. Near the Courtyard there was also a settlement of merchants, most likely French. From 1346 the place was used as (and called) the New Hen Market, as it specialized in selling poultry. The 16th century saw here a rise of municipal kitchens for Prague’s poor. Hence another historical name of this area, V Kuchynkách (In the Kitchens). The Church of St Linhart and its cemetery stood originally on the site depicted in the picture.

The author of this painting is Václav Jansa. You can find this painting in book 'Starou Prahou Václava Jansy' (visit link) .

Vaclav Jansa (October 22, 1859 Slatinice - June 29, 1913 Cernošice) (visit link) Czech landscape artist and illustrator, best known for these views, originally painted in water-colour.
Jansa was apprenticed to buyers, but later he devoted himself to his hobby of drawing and painting. Vaclav Jansa traveled a lot and took to painting landscapes. He painted mostly southern Bohemia and Giant Mountains. Since 1893 was redeveloped historic districts of Prague, Prague ghetto and parts of the Old and New Town. In this time Jansa painted cca 150 colored watercolors documenting disappearing part of the city.

Zprava rozsáhlý zelený dum c.p. 128/1 U Cerných sloupu ci U Cerného orla tvorený nestejne vysokými cástmi a partií vystupující do námestí.
