In Wilmington, on summit of Whiteface Mountain, is a trail with interpretive signs as you make your way to the summit.
The mountain is accessible via the Veterans Memorial Highway, which winds its way from the north side of the mountain. There is a toll to pay there. From there drive to the top, park in the lot there, then walk toward the castle-like building, walk through one of the tunnels and to a courtyard on the other side where there is a set of stairs. The stairs is the start of the trail.
The trail is a steady climb up from 4610 ft to 4867 ft at the summit. After climbing the stairs, you reach uneven footing that are a mix of stairs and ledges. Handrails help you along. Along the way up, signs are posted that have ecological topics. topics range from the changes in forest mixture at different elevations, how plants adapt to the hostile conditions on the mountain, and size vs age in exposed vs. lower heights.
This is a moderately challenging trail, even on a good day. The footing could be slippery in wet or icy weather, and it could be could in the wind.
