Think Sudbury, think mining. The city is so much more now but barely two decades ago it was very much a one industry town. It is considered the flagship community of Canadian mining. It owes its beginnings to the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s which forged links between Central Canada and the newly settled West. Railway employees made the first discovery of copper and nickel deposits which led to the mining boom. Sudbury was in fact to go on to corner the world nickel market. The railway brought prospectors and took away the weighty metal. The geology of the region accounts for Sudbury’s vast mineral resources. This part of the Laurentian Shield forms a shallow depression about 60 kilometers in length. Ore is exposed on hills which form a ridge. The landform was created either by a meteor or by a volcano. INCO and Falconbridge have been the two giant mining companies which employed the majority of miners over the years. Mining was designated of national significance in 1973. A federal plaque recognizing the importance of nickel mining to Canada was erected in Sudbury in 1983.
