King Charles I attempted to reform the Scottish church in 1638. Reaction to these reforms was led by the Covenanters, who believed in Presbyterianism rather than Episcopacy.. The King, eager to assert his authority, mounted a campaign against the Covenanters in 1639, known as the first Bishop’s War. Due to lack of funds, unpopularity and lack of preparedness the result was a truce known as the Pacification of Berwick.
In 1640 the King tried to gain funds from parliament to fight a second Bishop’s War, and was not successful. The Covenanters didn’t wait for Charles 1 and invaded northern England in August 1840. The main Covenanter army took Newcastle and a truce was called, the Treaty of Ripon in October 1840.
The Treaty of Ripon allowed the Scots to retain Newcastle and Durham and made Charles I pay the Scots £850 per day until the outstanding issues were resolved. Charles had to convene the Long Parliament to ratify the treaty. The war was finally concluded by the Treaty of London in 1641. These actions precipitated the English Civil War.
The plaque reads
“Near this site once stood Nunwick Prebend House where in October 1640, when Charles I had been ruling without a Parliament for 11 years, the Treaty of Ripon was signed. This Treaty, between the King and the Scottish Covenaters, resulted in calling the "Long Parliament", which substantially curtailed the powers of the English Monarchy.”
